Drumroll

Filed In Announcements Site News

According to the old proverb, “the shoemakers’ children have no shoes”, we like many fellow designers are the last ones to update our own portfolio. Well, we have at last found the time to update ours.

Check out all the work we’ve been busy doing since the birth of Winkbox 2 years ago. We will be adding multimedia items next so check back often as the simpler interface will make it easy for us to keep our portfolio current. Enjoy!

BOOM!

Filed In Announcements Charlotte

I want to thank the academies, and the AIGA… The website we recently designed for Jim Genell was selected as a winner of the fifth annual AIGA BOOM! design competition. We’re not sure what place we won just yet, that will be disclosed at the award ceremony, but we did compete against the best design shops in North and South Carolina, so any award is a big achievement to us.

The winning piece will be presented to the public at the BOOM! Gala on April 4 at 7:00 pm at the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte. Winning entries are included in an exhibition book and will be part of an exhibition that will travel to Charlotte and Raleigh this summer.

We invite you to attend the Gala with us, all details can be found at boomshow.org, or view the traveling show this summer.

You can read all about our winning entry in our December blog.

UPDATE: We won the Silver! Considering the competition we are very happy to have placed so high. We want to thank the Charlotte AIGA for putting on such a great event.

Winkbox turns 2

Filed In Announcements

Last week Winkbox turned two. This might be baby years for some, but to paraphrase Jeffrey Zeldman, two years “…is a couple of centuries in internet time.” It’s been an amazing ride thus far, and we only look back to ask ourselves why didn’t we do this sooner? Now we just need to find the time to celebrate.

ARTstroll

Filed In Announcements Art

Winkbox recently designed a logo for the Lincolnton Art Stroll. Even though we only had one week to develop the logo, and we worked on pro-bono basis, the result will most likely end up in our portfolio (if we ever find the time to update it).

The logo is a paint splash mixed with more refined lines. To contrast the organic forms we chose Scala Sans as the typeface. The hard, straight lines of Scala Sans not only complement the organic forms but are also very readable. The color pallet is interchangeable, giving it some life and allowing for change with seasons or themes of the show. We also felt giving the organizers some ownership of the logo will let them feel more connected to it.

The Lincolnton Art Stroll will take place on January 23, 2009 from 5:30 to 9:30PM and will feature the artwork of 70+ artists in 15 downtown storefronts-turned-art galleries.

The free event will feature original paintings, pottery, fine art photography, woodturning, and sculpture. Maps to guide strollers through the galleries will be provided, and refreshments and live music will be available in select locations.

I will also be displaying my latest body of personal artwork at The Downtown Development Association of Lincolnton located at 114 E. Main Street, stop by and say hi!

For more information, including a listing of participating artists and venues, visit www.artstroll.org.

Modern Fabrics

Filed In Announcements

Our writer, Jodi Helmer, sent this email to her friends. We thought it was such a nice way to introduce the Modern Fabrics Charlotte store we decided to include it here. Thanks Jodi!
-Ewa

James Powell, Ewa’s husband, just opened a great new store in Charlotte, NC called Modern Fabrics. It’s filled with designer fabrics that have been rescued from the landfills. (All of the fabrics are brand new but area furniture manufacturers often send their high quality fabric remnants to the landfill. James steps in and rescues it before it hits the dumpster). The selection is awesome! If you’re in Charlotte and need the perfect fabric for a project, please stop by. Not in the Queen City? They sell everything online at http://modern-fabrics.com/ too. See the download for a 20% discount, directions and store hours. Happy shopping!
