Take a hike

Filed In Thoughts

I don’t know about you, but I’ve long ago given up on finishing a journal. I love to start them, but after about ten pages I start feeling like my sketchbook or journal is turning out lame and I want to start a new one.

But things might be changing for me. On our trip to the Seed Conference in Chicago, Coudal Partners gifted all the participants with a set of 3.5″ x 5.5″ old school notebooks they appropriately named Field Notes. Six months later I finally decided to use one on my backpacking trip through the Smoky Mountains.

It was perfect because it was light, I had to carry it for over 40 miles, it was durable, I crammed it into a tight 30+ pound backpack for 5 days, and it was short 40 pages after I ripped out a signature or two when we ran out of toilet paper. And to my own amazement, overjoy and pride, I was able to complete the first journal in my life.

You can see my whole journal, and read about our adventures on the Appalachian Trail including a too close for comfort bear encounter, here.
